Desperate for advice

Postby guitarbloke » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:53 pm

Hi everyone,

I've just turned 30 years old a few weeks ago and for the last 6 years or so I have had a continually expanding bald patch on the top (centre) of my head. I am also receding at my temples now. I'm assuming this is what they call "Male Pattern Baldness" as my granddad (on my mum's side) was completely bald.

It's always been very embarrassing for me and made far worse due to the fact that my hair is long (for a guy) - it's about 18inches which makes the patch look even more unsightly.

As a second job, I'm a singer in a rock band - nothing famous, but am frequently in photos, videos etc which makes me even more self-consciencious.

I've been using a product I found online called "Nanogen" for the last 5 years, which I apply and and then comb some of my hair over it. But lately it's taking more and more Nanogen to cover it and I'm getting more and more disheartened and sad about my situation. I love having long hair, it's always been a part of me and I don't want to relinquish it.

I considered transplantation for a while, but for the expense involved, I'd need to know that the rest of my hair isn't going to fall out leaving just the transplanted area behind. So that's a no-go for me.

I've read recently about a company called Bloomsbury in London who make "hair systems" some kind of vacuum fitted hair piece from what I gather. These cost in the region of £1000 - so cheaper than a transplant. I was about to call them today to arrange a consultation, until I read on another forum about waves of unhappy customers complaining about Bloomsbury's quality and service. So now that's another option down.

Can anyone advise me on quality hair/wigmakers in the UK who provide a good quality, natural looking, reliable and custom service? there seem to be so many out there that it's impossible to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Any advice at all that anyone can pass on to me would be so much appreciated. Every single day I have to spend an hour Nanogen'ing, spraying and combing over my hair before I can leave the house. If it rains unexpectedly I have to get under cover for fear of the Nanogen running down my face. If the wind picks up I have to run for cover so that my heavily hair-sprayed comb-over doesn't move and expose my shame - and I really am ashamed. at the weekends, I cannot go anywhere unless I am at least wearing a cap/hat otherwise I have to spend all that time 'fixing' my hair. I can't even drive with the windows open in the summer because I'm scared that my comb over will shift and all the matted down Nanogen will be on display for the world to see. It's just starting to get me down in a really big way. I've not put this down in words before but just typing it all out here has actually made me quite upset, it's really affecting my self-esteem.

Thanks in advance

You dont want a wig, they are always easy to spot however expensive they may be.

If your losing your hair there is three things you could do.

1: Look at buying Propecia, its easily the most successful hair loss product on the market today.

2: Have consultation with a hair transplant surgeon or Trichologist.

3: Just face it your going bald shave your hair and go for a new look.

Hi Sean,

I completely empathize with your situation. I started losing my hair at 26 and it was devastating. Most people were fine with my hair loss with only the occasional jibe but it was how it made me feel that was the worst.

After months and months of research I found there is no miracle cure. There is no lotion, or herb, or pill, or suppliment that you can take that will guarentee your hair back. Some companies make claims of regrowth through their products or treatments but in reality success is extremely limited and you only find this out after months and months of hope and significant financial investment.

I looked into everything; laser treatment, transplants, implants, suppliments, herbs, medical lotions/shampoos, pills etc but none could give me GUARENTEES that their treatment was going to be succesful and let's face it that's what we want. If I devote a lot of time and money into something then I want to know I am going to get results. I couldn't contemplate that thought of spending hours and hours in treatments and hundred maybe thousands of pounds only to see minimal success, if at all!

Transplants and implants obvously have a more positive effect in that they give you hair back but if you are going to continue to lose hair (as is the case in most guys) then these options are only a stop gap before further treatment is going to be required. The thought of the treatment also put me off and after watching videos of the treatments taking place I decided this was not for me.

In the end the only real guarentee of success in my opinion was a hair system. Daunting I know, believe me but it seemed the only real way to pay for something that was guarenteed to make me look like I didn't have hair loss.

There are major stigma's surrounding wig's and I had to be majorly convinced before even contemplating them but after seeing the product and talking to others that have had them I was happy to go ahead. The stigma's are hangover from the 80's and 90's when celebs wore ill fitting and obvious wig's that made headlines and excellent material for standup comedians but the quality appears to have moved on in quantum leaps since then.

I was introduced to a company that could answer all my questions, show me the product I was going to buy and talk to customers who were already using hair systems. After weeks and weeks of diliberation I was ready to take the leap. I have never looked back since.

I have heard people say that they are obvious and un-natural but in the 4 years I have worn one the only people who know I wear a system are those I have chosen to tell. That includes my family who had no idea at all.

A lot depends on the quality of the system you get and the stylist that blends the system with your existing hair but the results can be fantastic. I pay £650 per system and they last me approx 4 months. You might have to pay more for long hair but it is a lot cheaper than some I was quoted for.

A global brand that I visited wanted £2600 per system! I have heard of other people who were charged £4000!! BE AWARE there are unscrupulous companies out there who will try and pray on your insecurities only to try and wrip you off.

In short, in my opinion, there is no miracle cure. If there was these companies would be the richest in the world and every blad or balding man in the world would have a full head of hair.

Good luck,

J
